Within the Dolly ropeFree project, the approach is develop solutions for the main reasons why dolly rope ends up in the sea: wear and tear during fishing and poor waste management practices on board fishing vessels. This approach translates into three areas of activities:

1. The first is to develop alternative materials and net protection
2. The second is to develop alternative net designs aimed at lifting the net.
3. The third is improved litter management on board fishing vessels.

The alternatives have to live up to certain standards, they have to be more environmentally friendly, comparable to dolly rope from a financial perspective (or cheaper of course) an at least as practical to use on board.
